Will’s cyanotype paintings, large washes of blue, make me think of the sky on sunny autumn days. Golden sunlight, crisp air, clear blue sky. Using sunlight as part of the painting process, Will leaves his paintings out in the sun to expose, leaning up against the outside wall of his studio. Silver clouds reflected in the windows above. The sun soaks into the canvas, developing the washes of cyanotype solution he has painted onto the fabric. In the same way sunlight soaks through Will’s work I decided to paint it in mine; glowing over tables, chairs, cakes. In the morning, my kitchen table is covered in sunlight; streaming through glass doors which open up into the garden. One evening after harvesting a pumpkin that grew in the sun and sea air of our garden, my flatmates and I cooked a dinner of spiced pumpkin soup with crispy sage leaves and cheese toast. For dessert I made lemon, semolina, fennel cake; and lemon granita in a clear glass dish, which we ate in small bowls topped with cream. The essence of Will’s paintings make me think of these moments. Blue sky days. Crisp mornings. Spending time eating breakfast in the autumn sun. I painted these small moments with one of Will’s paintings in the studio with me, as inspiration; hanging like the sky up on the wall.
