Walnut
Juglans nigra

Walnut is the plant of protection. It contains the chemical juglone, which prevents certain plants from growing around it - a protective mechanism to expel all that could drain its nutrients. Walnut gifts us with a protective shield to expel unwanted energies. A canopy tree that grows tall and strong towards the light, walnut reminds us of our inner wisdom and innate healing abilities.

Native to Turtle Island, North America. Naturalised in Aotearoa and Australia.

St. John’s Wort
Hypericum perforatum

St. John’s Wort is the plant of light and duality. Infused with the sun’s warmth, it guides us through darkness and shadows. Traditionally used as a nervous system tonic to relieve anxiety, low moods, and improve sleep quality. Warming, soothing and uplifting.

Native to Europe, North Africa, West Asia. Naturalised in Aotearoa, Australia and Turtle Island, North America.

Iron (Fe)

Ruled by Mars, Iron is an element infused with strength, protection, passion, interconnectedness and expansiveness. This element is found in soil, rocks, plants, stars, the sun, our bodies, and the earth’s core. Iron used for Plantscapes has been collected from rusted nails soaked in jars of rainwater.

Willow
Salix babylonica

Willow is a plant of movement, acceptance and release. Willow loves to grow near streams and creeks, their long branches shifting in the wind next to the flowing water. Willow brings relief from pain, fever and inflammation. Emerge from Willow’s care shiny, silvery and soft.

Native to China. Naturalised in Aotearoa, Australia, and the Southern states of USA on Turtle Island.

Mugwort
Artemisia

Mugwort is the plant of dreams and flowing energy. Traditionally used to cleanse spiritual and physical environments; and to facilitate connections to the divine, through inducing lucid and prophetic dreaming. Mugwort creates a gentle warmth that alleviates muscle aches and pains. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, mugwort is burned to help stimulate and improve the flow of Qi (energy) in the body. Mugwort’s scientific name, Artemisia, comes from Artemis, Greek goddess of wild nature and the moon.

Native to Europe, North Africa, Asia, and Alaska. Naturalised in Aotearoa, Australia and Turtle Island, North America.

Nettle
Urtica dioica

Stinging Nettle is known as a protective plant ally. The aerial part of the plant is covered in discrete hair like structures that will sting upon contact. This plant carries profound virtues in medicine and spiritual wellbeing. Nettle is ruled by Mars, a planet associated with action, assertion and passion. Nettle’s protective make-up brings clarity in self assertion, igniting inner passions and approaching confirmation in a healthy manner.

Native to Africa, Europe,and Asia. Naturalised in Aotearoa and Australia.
